Orthodontics: all about the Invisalign method

From a certain age, it is hard to envisage wearing a dental appliance! However, new techniques allow today to embark on the adventure of orthodontics in all discretion. This is the case of the Invisalign method, of which Dr. David Issembert, an orthodontist in Paris, details the functioning and the multiple advantages for us.

Invisalign: Invisible Orthodontics

The Invisalign technique makes it possible to align the teeth using custom-made removable gutters that the patient has to wear 22 hours on 24 and change every 15 days. The method, created in 1997, is discreet and painless. Today, it is widely accepted by adults for whom the wearing of an external orthodontic device is poorly experienced. Arriving in France 10 years ago, the technique broke with the traditional methods and revolutionized the sector.

For almost all cases

Before proposing the Invisalign method to his patient, the orthodontist must ensure that he is eligible. For a long time limited to cases of minor misposition or shift, Invisalign allows today to treat most cases. However, the technique is not useful in aligning the teeth in case of colossal overlap, too pronounced recoil of the jaw or to fill the extraction spaces. Invisalign asks to be very diligent and to carry the gutters as much as possible. For this reason, the method is rarely prescribed to adolescents.

The different stages of orthodontic treatment with Invisalign

Step 1: During the first appointment, the practitioner checks that Invisalign is appropriate for the patient and explains the treatment.

Step 2: The second meeting consists of the taking of fingerprints but also the realization of radios and photographs.

Step 3: The complete file is then sent directly to Invisalign who will then do a simulation called “clin check” and plan the movement of the teeth every 15 days. The orthodontist then takes control of the “clin check” thus realized and then moves the teeth one by one, also modifying the positioning of the cleats on the teeth. There is usually between 5 and ten go/return between the Orthodontist and Invisalign to perform the perfect simulation.

Step 4: When the clin check is approved, the gutters for the whole treatment are realized thanks to a 3D printer. There are usually between 24 and 30. The patient then comes to the cabinet for the installation of gutters and cleats whose role is to help the rotation of a tooth, to bring some closer or to orient a tooth In a particular movement. The patient then comes to the practice only every two months, except in exceptional cases. During these appointments, the orthodontist may be required to perform “stripping,” that is to say polishing between the teeth or an annuloplasty which consists in remodeling a tooth that is too long by microabrasion.

Step 5 : After completion of the treatment, and of course the reissue of a set of finishing gutters (in 1 to 2 cases out of 10), the patient enters the last phase which is that of the restraint with a thread down and A thread at the top of canine to canine to keep for life. A safety gutter is also given to the patient if the thread breaks and waiting for the appointment with the orthodontist.

Orthodontics without thinking

Apart from a sensation of pressure with each change of gutter, the Invisalign method is painless. Many patients today treated with Invisalign have experienced orthodontic treatments with rings in adolescence and see a clear difference in comfort between the two techniques.

Wearing the gutters 22h on 24h may seem to constrain, but their maintenance is very simple. Just remove them to eat, rinse them with clear water and then brush their teeth before putting them back. It may also be useful to brush them once a day with a toothbrush (different from that with which you brush your teeth!) And a little toothpaste. The gutters are only for 15 days, made of a very solid plastic; they do not have any time to degrade.

Invisalign: the most and the least

Advantages: Generally less painful and less uncomfortable than a conventional or lingual dental appliance, faster treatment if only canine to canine movement, the predictability of the result thanks to the blank check, less invasive method.

Disadvantages: The Invisalign process is more expensive than conventional treatment, the success of the treatment depends on the patient’s diligence in wearing his gutters, not adapted to very complex cases.
