  • The Echinacea strengthens the immune system. Take 200 mg two or three times a day at the first signs of a mouth ulcer, then reduce the dose when the sores begin to heal. (Caution: Echinacea should be avoided if you suffer from an autoimmune disease such as lupus erythematosus or a degenerative disease such as multiple sclerosis or tuberculosis).
  • Vitamin C, combined with flavonoids, promotes the healing of the oral mucosa. Citrus fruits are an excellent source of vitamin C, but they can trigger canker sores in some people. Take an extra 250 mg of vitamin C and flavonoids (which increase the effectiveness of vitamin C) three times a day.
  • Zinc could accelerate the healing of oral wounds. At the first signs, take 25 mg of zinc daily in the form of tablets until the disappearance of ulceration. (Caution: do not exceed this dose because excess zinc is toxic.)

Mouth ulcers: prevention is better than cure

  • Avoid the foods responsible for canker sores. Some cereals, seafood, pineapple, citrus fruits, dried fruits (especially walnuts), figs, chocolate, tomatoes, green peppers, strawberries, gruyere or vinegar, are most often incriminated.
