What is Baby bottle syndrome?

Botulism syndrome is characterized by a large number of early caries, which can affect the entirety of the teeth of the child. It usually occurs around the age of 3-4 years, but can attack even younger children. Thanks to prevention messages, disseminated by dental surgeons to pregnant women and young mothers, the number of children with this syndrome has decreased in recent years. Nevertheless, some cases regularly continue in the office.

How to diagnose it?

The first affected teeth are those at the anterior (front) level, from canine to canine, up and down. If the disease is at an early stage, only a dentist can detect it. If on the contrary, it has already progressed, the parents can observe on one or more of the teeth of the child a brown coloration. Very weakened, the decayed teeth break as easily. It is a sign that should alert them.

What causes early caries?

As its name indicates, the main culprit of this syndrome is the bottle. Moreover, more precisely, it is immoderate use. Thus, this syndrome affects children whose teeth are in prolonged contact with, inside their bottle, a sweet drink (soda, fruit juice, fresh milk.). To calm him, to occupy him, to make him wait … many parents give their baby a bottle of this type all day long. Also affected are children whose parents give a sweet bottle for a nap or at night. In both cases, milk teeth bathe for several hours in a cariogenic fluid, without the saliva playing its role: remineralizing the teeth and buffering with the acids. The late period is a period during which the production of saliva decreases sharply; the phenomenon is all the more important.

Why treat caries on milk teeth?

Caries, even on milk teeth, should be dealt with as soon as possible. On the one hand, because they can be very painful. On the contrary, they can have serious consequences, be it for other milk teeth, which they risk colonizing, but also for the definitive teeth to come. In fact, when caries reaches the pulp zone of the tooth, where the nerves and blood vessels are located, an abscess is formed. Then the bacteria migrate into the blood and can even infect other organs, yet located remotely.

How is Baby bottle syndrome treated?

In many cases, office-based care is not enough to treat the decayed teeth of toddlers and extraction, to stop the carious spread, is necessary. Depending on the number of teeth to be removed and the age of the child, general anesthesia may be considered. To prevent the teeth from fracturing, pediatric crowns can be placed on the molars. When many teeth have been removed, it is possible to use small appliances. To be often renewed, to follow the growth of the child, they are often very expensive.

What are the consequences for the child?

In addition to the effects of caries (pain, abscesses, infections, etc.), bottle syndrome can have other implications for the development of the child. Whether her milk teeth are weakened by decay or have been extracted, the disease prevents her from eating properly.

In addition to the food imbalances that this entails, the absence of good mastication hampers the harmonious development of its jaw, which can affect the last teeth to come. Finally, aesthetic problems can disrupt social integration and psychological balance.

How to prevent botulinum syndrome?

To guarantee good oral hygiene, which is the only way to combat cavities, it is essential to follow the following guidelines strictly:

  • The bottle is not a blanket or a pacifier: except if it contains pure water, never leave it indefinitely to a baby or young child, especially during naps or at night. Milk, which contains lactose, is naturally sweet, so it should be considered in the same way as other sugary drinks. Sodas and fruit juices are twice as bad because of both sweet and sour. An acidity that persists even in light products.

  • Baby teeth should be brushed as soon as they grow. In the beginning, they can be cleaned by the parents using a compress soaked in water, then with a toothbrush, adapted to the age of the child. About two years old, fluoridated toothpaste appears. It makes it possible to reinforce the crystalline structure of the teeth. Nevertheless, pay attention to overdose which can have the opposite effects. This is why fluoride supplements are no longer systematic and must depend on balance to be performed at the dentist.
  • The first consultation of the child to a dentist to take place around the age of 3 years. This is a key event for screening for any problems that may arise early, such as bottle syndrome, but also an opportunity for the dentist to prevent future ones. It also allows the child to understand the dentist’s world from an early age.

Does Breastfeeding Protect Baby bottle syndrome?

Dentists recommend breastfeeding up to 6 months of age. Suction would have a beneficial effect on the formation of the jaw, with a decrease in orthodontic problems in adolescence in breastfed infants. Nevertheless, breast milk remains sweet, and thus, like cow’s milk, can promote caries.
