When you think of oral hygiene, do you make about the health of your gums? “In the minds of many people, brushing teeth is limited to teeth maintenance and tooth decay prevention,” says Robert MacGregor, a Nova Scotia dentist. “It is just as important to prevent gum disease,” he says.

Periodontal problems, or diseases of the gums, are much more widespread than you think. The Canadian Dental Association estimates that four out of five Canadians will eventually suffer from gum disease. Also, gum problems increase with age. Why? Because the current health of our gums depends on how we have taken care of it during our lifetime.

Gum disease is usually caused by an accumulation of plaque between the tooth and the gum. Over time, if the plaque is not removed properly, it hardens and causes inflammation. This can lead to infection and result in a reduction in gingival tissue. If you are still not convinced to take good care of your gums, read the following six reasons:

Reason 1: Gum problems are difficult to detect

Early stages of the disease usually have no pain or no symptoms. Unfortunately, it is for this reason that you will have difficulty knowing what is smoldering in your mouth.

There is a good chance that you will discover other links between the health of your gums and health problems. “There are always new scientific breakthroughs,” said Dr. MacGregor. Experts agree that the best way to prevent gum problems is to brush your teeth and floss well every day.

Tips for Healthy Gums

  • Do not brush your teeth too aggressively and always use a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing your teeth too hard can lead to loosening of these.
  • Consult your dentist regularly. A dental health professional will identify problems that you can not detect.
  • Try to manage your stress. Stress increases the risk of inflammation, including inflammation of the gums.
  • Avoid grinding or teething. This is a bad habit that will wear your gingival tissue much faster.
  • Stop smoking. Smokers are much more vulnerable to periodontal problems.
  • Eat healthily and adopt a balanced diet. A body nourished with good foods will fight infections more effectively.

“The number one rule is to have good oral hygiene,” says Dr. MacGregor. If you can not stem the plaque, you can at least control the inflammation of your gums. This will make it easier to prevent periodontal disease. “
